A Tranquil Retreat

Simpson House - Santa Barbara

Santa Barbara's Simpson House Inn

By Heather Irwin

SANTA BARBARA—Located just south of the sprawling vineyards of Wine Country, the town of Santa Barbara is a vibrant ocean-side town that serves as a great home-base for day-time winery jaunts. Nearly all of its hopping nightlife, beaches, world-class shopping, music and cultural activities make this American Riviera a must-stop on visitors' travel itinerary.

Adding to the prestige of Santa Barbara is the historic Simpson House Inn, the only AAA five-diamond bed and breakfast in North America. This 15-room Victorian offers elegant accommodations and frequent special programs (yoga instruction, cooking classes) for guests, just blocks from theaters, restaurants, farm markets, and the nearby Alice Keck Park Memorial Garden. That is, if you leave your room at all.

Built in 1874, owners Glyn and Linda Davies have carefully restored the property to its former grandeur, adding modern amenities like bathrooms, comfy beds and sauna tubs, while maintaining the stately oaks and secluded English gardens to make the experience feel both modern and quaint.

But what guests continually rave about is the service and attention to detail—like elaborate wine receptions with local wines, hors d'oevres, cheese and crackers along with a complementary three-course gourmet breakfast from chef Leah Varrone. All services are included without gratuity.

Four of the 15 rooms are located in the Old Barn, which was completely disassembled and rebuilt to include wood-burning fireplaces and private bathrooms. With names like the Hayloft, Tack and Carriage room, guests get plenty of country charm (minus the hay).

Four private cottages are also situated on the property, offering canopied beds, teak floors, and European antiques. All of the rooms are uniquely appointed with pillow-top mattresses and comforters, king or queen-sized beds, TV/VCRs, CD and DVD players, and private bathrooms. Be sure to ask about rooms that overlook the tranquil gardens. A variety of in-room spa treatments are available, as well.

Room rates range from $235 to $605 per night. For more information, contact the Simpson House Inn at www.simpsonhouseinn.com or at 800.676.1280.
